MARA LEA BROWN
Tarot in Pandemic and Revolution - Art Collaboration
Adrián Arias came up with the idea of creating a unique 2020 Tarot deck where various artists could reflect on the events and feelings of 2020. Mara was one of the artists who participated in this project. She was randomly assigned seven cards: "Justicia," "La Torre," "Reina de Bastos," "III de Bastos," "VII de Bastos," "IX de Bastos" y "X de Bastos." Below are her interpretations:
LA JUSTICIA
Me siento afortunada de haber recibido la carta de la Justicia. Estamos en un momento de reflexión forzada pero necesaria que nos está ayudando a discernir nuestras prioridades. La justicia social es esencial. Fue un honor pintar a una mujer fuerte, decidida y conectada a la naturaleza que representa la lucha por un mundo justo y equitativo. Su piel es oscura, su vestimenta cómoda y luce una bella corona de cabello natural. Nos desafía con sus ojos a tomar acción.
I feel fortunate to have received the Justice card. We are in the midst of a forced yet necessary moment of reflection that is helping us discern our priorities. Social justice is essential. It was an honor to paint a woman who is strong, determined and connected to nature who represents the fight for a fair and equitable world. Her skin is dark, her clothing comfortable and she dons a beautiful crown of natural hair. She challenges us with her eyes to take action.
LA TORRE
Cuando vi que me tocó pintar la carta de la Torre me estremecí, pero también sentí mucha esperanza. El COVID-19 es temible y despiadado. Sin embargo también está resaltando las dolorosas inequidades que existen en nuestra sociedad. Nos está obligando a incomodarnos y efectuar cambios. Los sistemas de opresión han de ser destruidos. Tenemos la oportunidad de reconsiderar y volver a construir desde cero.
When I learned I would be painting the Tower card I trembled, but I also felt a lot of hope. COVID-19 is fearsome and merciless. Nevertheless it is also highlighting the painful inequities that exist in our society. It is forcing us to get uncomfortable and make changes. Systems of oppression must be destroyed. We have the opportunity to rethink and rebuild from scratch.
LA REINA DE BASTOS
La Reina de Bastos es una carta optimista que entre otras cosas representa la vitalidad, la confianza y la independencia. Cuando la comunidad se alzó para protestar la brutalidad policial, florecieron espontáneamente hermosos y coloridos murales por todo el país. La creatividad nos nutre en los momentos más duros.
The Queen of Wands is an optimistic card that amongst other things represents vitality, confidence and independence. When the community rose to protest police brutality, beautiful and colorful murals bloomed spontaneously throughout the country. Creativity nurtures us through the toughest of times.
III DE BASTOS
Pintar el III de Bastos me ha brindado la oportunidad de mirar hacia el futuro con esperanza. Deseo un futuro brillante y colorido donde todas las personas serán aceptadas exactamente por quiénes son, y donde usaremos nuestros talentos e ingenio en tandem con la naturaleza. Estas metas puede que parezcan distantes, especialmente dada nuestra situación sociopolítica actual, pero esta carta me ayuda a creer que el éxito es posible con planificación considerada y acción decidida.
Painting the III of Wands has given me the opportunity to look towards the future with hope. I wish for a bright and colorful future where every person will be accepted for exactly who they are, and where we will use our talents and ingenuity in tandem with nature. These goals may seem distant, especially given our current sociopolitical situation, but this card helps me believe success is possible with thoughtful planning and purposeful action.
VII DE BASTOS
El VII de Bastos muestra a una persona que se enfrenta a seis enemigos. Existe una gran desproporción en la lucha. Pinté a un joven activista indígena con un pie en el pasado y el otro en el presente. Le hace frente a una avalancha de codicia y desconsideración. Está decidido a proteger a su comunidad y tiene confianza en su propósito. Vencerá con el tiempo.
The VII of Wands shows a person who faces six enemies. He is greatly outnumbered in the fight. I painted an indigenous young activist with one foot in the past and the other in the present. He is standing up against an avalanche of greed and thoughtlessness. He is determined to protect his community and he is confident about his purpose. He will be victorious over time.
IX DE BASTOS
El IX de Bastos es un poderoso recordatorio que debemos perseverar. Las Vidas Negras Importan. Hemos estado luchando por mucho tiempo. La brutalidad policial es desgarradora. Estamos cansados. Estamos doloridos. La lucha continúa. Será difícil. Necesitaremos mostrar disciplina y encontrar equilibrio, y tendremos éxito.
The IX of Wands is a powerful reminder to persevere. Black Lives Matter. We have been fighting for a very long time. Police brutality is heart wrenching. We are tired. We are in pain. The fight continues. It will be hard. We will need to show discipline and find balance, and we will succeed.
X DE BASTOS
Cuando apareció por primera vez el COVID-19, los trabajadores de cuidado médico cargaron un peso abrumador. Necesitaron todo el apoyo que pudieran conseguir en forma de equipo de protección personal y solidaridad comunitaria. Se les pidió a todas las personas que llevaran máscaras para prevenir la propagación del virus. Para el X de Bastos pinté a una enfermera cargando camillas médicas. Incluí un gráfico que muestra que la curva se está aplanando para simbolizar que esta dura etapa ha concluido y que vendrá un tiempo mejor.
When COVID-19 first stuck, health care workers carried an overwhelming burden. They needed all the support they could get in the form of personal protective equipment and community solidarity. Every person was asked to wear masks to prevent the spread of the virus. For the X of Wands I painted a nurse carrying medical stretchers. I included a graph showing the curve flattening to symbolize that this difficult period has concluded and that better times will come.
